How we rated the cars

The game's Player Car screen provides a graph that shows the different characteristics for each car.The four characteristics are Acceleration, Top Speed, Braking, and Handling.We assigned each car a value ranging between 1 and 10 for each of the four characteristics.The ratings we assigned to each are shown on the first four charts below.

The fifth chart shows an overall value for each car.To derive the overall value we assigned each characteristic a weight. The weightings we chose for each characteristic were as follows:

Acceleration = 4

Top Speed = 2.5

Braking = 1.5

Handling = 3

divider
The Ferrari F50 is the best at acceleration.

divider
The McLaren F1 has the best top speed.

divider
The McLaren F1 is also best at braking.

divider
The Lotus GT1 is the best handling car.

divider
In analyzing the overall results, we discovered four pairs of cars that are more or less evenly matched.

McLaren F1 vs Ferrari F50

In overall points, we gave the McLaren a 100 and the Ferrari 94.5.If you have a true "need for speed", you MUST drive this car!Either car is an excellent choice for nailing the course records.The superior acceleration of the Ferrari gives it an initial advantage off the starting line.However, the better top speed and handling of the McLaren make it the car of choice.Drivers who are new to the game will find the McLaren an excellent confidence builder.

Lotus GT1 vs Ford GT90

We gave the Lotus 87.5 points and the Ford 87.Which of these cars is the better one? Good question...The winner of this matchup is going to depend on the race course.The Lotus GT1's better handling gives it a significant edge, especially on courses with lots of corners.But don't count the Ford out. The Ford's faster acceleration and higher top speed give it the ability to catch up quickly on the straightaways.A matchup between these two cars is likely to be a close one.

Jaguar XJ220 vs Isdera 112i

We gave the Jaguar 76.5 points and the Isdera 72.Once the Isdera builds up momentum its superior top speed makes it tough to catch.However, the Jaguar's better acceleration and braking give it a slight advantage in this matchup.Interestingly, this pair of cars rates the lowest in handling of any of the eight cars.As a consequence, experienced drivers will appreciate the challenge of these cars while the newer drivers are likely to find these cars tough to tame.

Lotus Esprit V8 vs Italdesign Cala

This matchup is a very close one, and we gave the Lotus Esprit a 65 and the Cala a 64.The Cala has slightly better handling but the Esprit has slightly better acceleration.We recommend new drivers start out with either of these cars, especially for taming some of the twistier courses.
