From: Spyder Sent: Friday, April 17, 1998 11:43 AM To: Spectrosan@aol.com Subject: Using Paintkit (revised 4/17/1998) The following information pertains to the use of individual cars and car sets for the Original NASCAR Racing game from Papyrus (Sierra). This information DOES NOT apply to NASCAR 2. What is a "Car Set": A "car set" is a single file that contains all 40 cars that make up the car set. A car set file is a binary file, which means it is not easily readable by a human. Try opening a binary file with a text editor program and you will see what I mean. The PaintKit program: The PaintKit program is part of the commercial version of the NASCAR Racing game. PaintKit does not come with the demo version. The purpose of the PaintKit program is to allow you to manipulate the cars contained in a car set. The most common use of PaintKit is to paint individual cars. The PaintKit will also let you import, export, and swap the position of cars within the car set. Exporting cars from a car set using PaintKit: You can also use PaintKit to export individual cars from the car set into individual PCX files. A PCX file is a binary file that can be viewed with a graphical viewer program. Some good graphical viewer programs that let you view PCX files include WinGIF or LView Pro. When you export a car from a car set, the PaintKit program will create a PCX file for the car you chose to export. The PCX file will get put into the root directory for the NASCAR Racing game. On most systems this will be the C:\NASCAR directory. The PCX file that you export will have one of the following 40 names, depending on which car you chose to export: PACE_0.PCX (this is the pace car) NASC94.PCX (this is always the car that you drive) NASC50.PCX (this car #50) SKOA_1.PCX MILL_2.PCX KODA_4.PCX KELL_5.PCX VALV_6.PCX EXID_7.PCX RAYB_8.PCX SLIP93.PCX ETER88.PCX VENT74.PCX OCEA70.PCX HIST58.PCX SPIN56.PCX PHOS48.PCX OKEL47.PCX DILP25.PCX QUIC09.PCX FAMI16.PCX HOOT19.PCX CITG21.PCX MAXW22.PCX DUPO24.PCX SKID00.PCX FATM69.PCX QUAK26.PCX TEXH28.PCX HEIL90.PCX OLIV71.PCX FOOD64.PCX PETR55.PCX ACDE52.PCX PENN30.PCX HARD31.PCX SKOA33.PCX REDC38.PCX MEIN41.PCX COUN51.PCX Importing cars into a car set using PaintKit: You can also use PaintKit to import individual cars into a car set. The trick to this is that you must rename the PCX file for the car you wish to import. You must use one of the 40 file names shown above. For example, to import a new car to replace the default #50 car, do the following: Note: The #50 car is the third car in the car set; the one just after the car that you drive. 1. Rename the file you are importing to NASC50.PCX 2. Put this file in the default NASCAR Racing directory 3. Run the PaintKit program 4. Select the #50 car 5. Click the Import button 6. Click the Save button If you did everything correctly, you will now see the new car in place of the old car. Keep in mind that you must ALWAYS rename the new car file (i.e., the one you got from my web page or wherever) into one of the 40 valid names above. The filename you use must also correspond with the position of the car within the set (for example, the COUN51.PCX file is the very last car in the set). Good luck and happy racing! http://home.gvi.net/~spyder/nascar.html
